The S.P.I.D.E.R. Method™ that powers Driver Z courses was developed by behavioral and driving experts to give teens and adults a simple set of tools to make safer choices and develop defensive driving skills to avoid collisions. Just like a superhero, you will develop a sixth sense that will allow you to detect danger before it happens. Four studies* conducted by state DMVs show that our students were involved in fewer crashes and got fewer tickets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will interacting with the app create a possible distraction while driving?
NO. Results are only available after a trip is completed. The app captures driving data, then shares driving results along with suggested training modules after a trip is completed. Training can be accessed anytime.
What is the Driving Safety Score? 
Individual trips are set for a star rating in each category: Speeding, Hard Braking, Rapid Acceleration, Sharp Turns, and Distracted Driving. Out of 5 stars, 4 or 5 are considered a good score.  The overall Driving Safety Score is generated based on a 14-day average and is rated from 1-100.  Obviously the closer to a 100, the better. We consider 80-100 over a 14-day average to be an excellent score; 70-80 is acceptable, but may require some attention.  Anything below 70 is a concern.
What is the benefit of using this app?
Just like athletes who need coaching to develop muscle memory, a new driver needs coaching to develop the driving muscle memory for safe driving. The app takes you beyond the minimum state requirements of driver's education and continues to coach the driver during the most critical time of their driving journey. The DriverZ Virtual Coach will make sure that the acquired knowledge is sticky and retain users' interest and engagement. Even if a driver has no unsafe driving events in a given week, the simple acknowledgment of a good ''report card” would make driving issues a regular part of the family discussion.
If I am a parent/mentor, how do I see results?
The Mentor and Driver need to install an app on their smartphone, then choose a role. The Mentor can invite up to 4 family members to participate. The Mentor has an option to participate in generating their own safety score or to just observe the driver’s performance.
Should the app be used before or after I get my driver’s license?
It is designed for new drivers who are driving independently and would like to develop additional driving skills to improve the “driving muscle memory,” using the SPIDER Method. However, the app can also be used during your initial driver training to provide you with additional feedback and skills.
Will Progressive use this score to raise premiums?
We don't share your score with Progressive or any other insurance company. Your rates won't be affected.
Do you share or sell my personal driving data?
The short answer is NO. We will share aggregated driving data with Progressive (i.e., combined across all app users), as well as metrics concerning your use of the app, but we will not share your personal driving data. Please refer to our privacy policy for complete details.
Is this a tracking app?
No, this app is designed to reinforce good driving habits using the SPIDER Method. We don’t provide real time tracking. However, we do share individual trip details with a mentor, which happens after the trip is completed, strictly for review and training purposes.
I am a parent/mentor. Will my driving score be shared with my mentees?
You have an option to opt out of being scored. However, we do encourage you to lead by example and share your score with your mentees.
