Steps to Getting Your Indiana Probationary Driver's License
When you're ready to get your driver's license, make sure you're prepared!
If you are under the age of 21 when you obtain your Indiana driver’s license, your license is considered to be a probationary driver’s license. Probationary Driver’s Licenses are subject to certain restrictions that remain in effect until the driver’s 21st birthday.
Make sure you bring the following along with you to your local BMV:
- Agreement of Financial Liability (State Form 39531) Make sure this form is notarized by a certified notary. In order to get you're driver's license, your parent or legal guardian must also take a copy of their driver's license or ID card. This will serve as an agreement that they will accept financial responsibility in lieu of the minor.
- Proof that you're enrolled in a state-licensed Indiana driver's ed program.
- A document that proves your identity, date of birth and SSN (social security number).
- Two documents proving U.S. citizenship and Indiana residency.
- Check out this list of acceptable documents (this list is specific to the Indiana BMV). Once you have all of the proper documentation, you’re ready head over to the BMV.
At the BMV, you'll need to:
- Meet the BMV's age requirement: you have to be 16 years and 90 days old to get your driver's license in Indiana.
- Have had your learner's permit for a minimum of 180 days.
- Show documents of identification.
- Show a completed and signed log of hands-on supervised driving. A blank log can be picked up from any state-licensed behind-the-wheel school. You must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving in Indiana, and 10 of those hours have to be completed at nighttime.
- Show that you have finished both driver's education and the hands-on-behind-the-wheel training.
After you've completed all of these steps, you will need to take the following:
- A written exam
- A hands-on driving test
