How do I get my New York Driver's License?

1
Prepare for the Written Permit Test
Study the NY State Driver's Manual and take the practice tests.

Class D and M permit tests are given in 14 languages: English, Albanian, Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, French, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian and Spanish.

To pass, you must get at least 14 of the 20 multiple-choice questions correct, including the correct answers to at least two of the four questions about road signs.

If you are applying for a motorcycle permit, you must get at least 3 out of the 5 motorcycle questions correct.

2
Gather What To Bring to the DMV
You will need proof of age, identity and residence
When you apply at the DMV to take your permit test, you will need to provide proof of age, identification and residence. Your permit will be Standard, Enhanced, or REAL ID, depending on the proofs you bring and the fee.

What is the difference between a Standard, Enhanced or Real ID?
See a side-by-side comparison to learn more and determine which ID is right for you.

See what documents you need
Complete one of these guides to ensure you have the documents and proofs of identification you need BEFORE you go to the DMV.

You can also see a complete list: How to Apply for a New York Learner Permit/Driver License/Non-Driver ID Card (PDF) (ID-44).

If you use the "Statement of Identity and/or Residence by Parent/Guardian (PDF)" (MV-45), your parent or guardian must come with you.
3
Complete Your Supervised In-Car Training Requirements
At the DMV, you will

  • First, apply and pay for your permit – see the fee chart to estimate the cost

  • Then, take the written test (if you fail, you can try again after 24 hours)

Office procedures have changed due to COVID-19.

We recommend you conduct your DMV business at the office or by mail in the County where you are a resident.

If you pass your written test

  • The DMV will give you a temporary permit at the office

  • You will receive your permit within 2 weeks by mail

Your permit will be valid for approximately 5 years (the exact expiration date depends on your date of birth and the date that you applied).
4
Lastly, You Will Need to Pass the New York State Road Test
Oh, but before you attempt to do that, those under 18 must have practiced under supervised driving (private driving lessons) for a minimum of 50 hours (at least 15 hours after sunset and 10 hours in moderate to heavy traffic) before going to the NYS DMV to get tested on the rules of the road.

Identity Verification

NY DMV Requirements

The NY DMV requires that you verify your identity at multiple touchpoints throughout the course. You will be prompted to answer a security question and complete a simple and easy typing verification process.
What is typing verification?

Each individual has a unique typing pattern based on the timings and durations of various key press events. We use state-of-the-art typing keystroke and biometrics analysis to store a baseline typing pattern that we then use to match new typing patterns and verify your identity. This allows us to maintain the integrity of your course progress in a non-intrusive manner.

Please note that your typing pattern is dependent on the device you setup your typing verification on. Your phone typing will be different from your desktop typing. For that reason, we strongly recommend you start and complete the course on the same type of device. If you do need to switch devices at some point, please reach out to our support staff to request that they reset your typing verification.

The process is straightforward:

  1. You will type in your name and email address on the device you use (twice), and our system will analyze it and store a base typing pattern unique to you.
  2. This typing pattern will be used to verify your identity throughout the course. You’ll be requested to type in your name and email address again to verify your identity.
  3. Should you fail this verification, you will be offered two more attempts to pass the typing verification.
  4. If you do fail the third attempt, DMV regulations mandate that you be excluded from the course. Don’t worry, we’ll allow you to retake the course at no extra cost.
  5. After successfully passing the typing verification, you will continue to the next chapter.
  6. Typing Verification is prompted in all remaining chapters.
